Illustration Friday - Forward

Last Stand - mixed media on burned petal inclusive paper

Today's Illustration Friday prompt, Forward, made me think of "that guy" from so many movies. You know the one... The gruff (yet noble) fellow who holds off the pursuing horde, bravely sacrificing himself while the major characters rush forward to safety.

This determined dude is made from watercolor, colored pencil, ink, markers and gold paint on paper. The paper has specks of dried leaves & flowers pressed into it. The torn and burnt left side has already fallen to the oncoming destruction. (The brown is just a piece of cardboard to help it scan better.) Click on either image to enlarge.

Musical Monday & A New Copper ACEO

Hey there. How's it going?

Chilling to Ramona Falls again. Coffee maker is still busted so feeling extra mellow this Monday.... If you're looking for some musical mayhem today, pop over to Xmas Dolly's & have a listen. There is no theme today, so folks will be sharing all kinds of fun ear-candy.

I took another copper etching workshop Saturday at the brick & mortar store for ebeads.com. Great times! We got to play with fun tools & messy chemicals and went home with some cool stuff at the end of the day.

I made an interesting bracelet and had enough copper left to create a few pendants, plus some etched copper art trading cards. My camera is charging, so photos will post later this week. I put the above copper card on the scanner but am not really thrilled with the quality of the image. The scan came out a little too brass-like & dull, but you get the idea.

Peacock Masquerade ATC swap

Peacock ATC

Just finished this mixed media art trading card (2.5" x 3.5") for peacock/masquerade- themed swap over at CreativeSouls. Mediums include watercolor, inktense & metallic pencils, pigma & pitt pens, markers, plus some white & gold paint on watercolor paper.

It seems like I haven't had time to create anything in ages & had a lot more fun than I'd expected. At first the prompt wasn't talking to me, so I put the tunes on random & poked around DeviantArt for a stock model to play with. Many thanks to FetishFarieStock for sharing her lovely photo PeacockIII.

Then Josh Ritter's Rattling Locks kicked on and everything fell into place. Once the paint dries I'll give this little lady a UV-resistant topcoat & backing board ... and send her on her way. I'm past deadline - I am a terrible swap partner. Playing along is great fun, but I have some major time management issues. (Elayne, if you're reading this, your altered tea box will be on its way soon - promise!!)

Wow - my 1st Musical Monday of the year - I missed last week trying to get back into the groove after winter break.

The whirlwind that was Nov / Dec finally took its toll, so I've been nursing a minor plague. It has been a terribly self indulgent recharging of batteries:. lots of sleep, toast & oceans of tea consumed along with several Cassandra Clare novels and Season 1 of The Vampire Diaries.

Finally broke down & checked out Pinterest - fun stuff! I'd been avoiding what I thought was yet another time sucking social media experiment. While the distraction potential is high, it seems like a great way to stash bookmarked faves & online muses all in one place.

(In real-life my overflowing file cabinet is filled with bursting "inspiration" folders with silly titles like Kinds of Blue and Venus Envy). If you're a fan of Pinterest, leave your address in the comments - I'd love to see what pulls your trigger.

Over the winter break, we visited some of my old stompin' grounds. 'Twas a crisp & blustery day filled with family & fun.

Planning on sharing a highlights of 2011 post today, I enjoyed wandering through memories of friends made, books read, destinations visited, artwork created & other wonders enjoyed this year. Then I decided that my 2011 can be summed up in 1 word:

Family

Loved ones gained & lost. Unions & reunions. A couple of close shaves. All made me appreciate & enjoy those close to me (& those far away) more than ever. I've blogged less and hugged more. For some people this is normal but for me.... not so much.

Shelly plays with a variety of mediums including photography, painting and jewelry design. You can click on any of the captions in this post for more info about her wonderful creations. Now that we've restoked the fireplace and settled into our cozy chairs, let's start with a few fun questions:

When did you first become interested in art & jewelry design?

SPL: I have been "creating" for as long as I can remember. My mom is always telling me stories about how I would sit with a few pieces of blank paper and a box of {that famous} 64 crayons for hours and just draw. As I grew, my interests in art & creating grew too. Before our soon-to-be four children came into my life, I was an upcoming self taughtartist. Several of my paintings sold in local galleries and online. I walked away from it all after {adopting} coming home with our first daughter, Francesca Mei, in 2005 from China. It was at that time I needed to focus my energy on my daughter and myself.

SPL: As the years past, I settled into motherhood ~ started a life as a stay at home wife & mom ~ and focus all my attention in growing our family {through the miracle of adoption}. Once our second daughter, Annabelle Faith, came home in 2008, I wanted to show & teach my daughters that even though you are a mom, you can still do what you love - and for me that is creating! After taking a few jewelry design classes and falling in love with all those semi precious gemstones, I knew I found where I needed to be. So I opened up my shop on etsy back in April of 2009 with about 30 pieces of sterling silver & semi precious one-of-a-kind jewelry creations and Mei Faith Studio was born.

What are your favorite materials and why?

SPL: Anything that I can express my visions with....whether it be with semi precious gemstones, a paint brush, a camera lens, or that box of 64 {still my favorite} crayons! It’s all about creating!

Which came 1st the painting, photography or jewelry?

SPL: Painting came first {picked up my first serious paint brush back in grade school} - than photography {took some advanced photography classes when in high school through a local college} - than jewelry.

Where do you find inspiration?

SPL: Everywhere and anywhere...but it is the simple things I see, like a certain color, shape and/or design, which gets my imagination working...

Do you listen to anything while creating?

SPL: Music...some days it is classical while other days it is very "alternative" ~ Theory of a Deadman is HUGE on my iPod!

What is the last book/movie you read/watched?

SPL: Seeing how it is Christmas time, I am glued to my TV watching all those holiday Hallmark, Lifetime, AMC and TCM movies! For me it doesn't matter if I've seen them {many times} before, I always enjoy watching them and it makes the holiday season that more real.

What do you like to do when you are not creating?

SPL: Be with my family - first and foremost but I also LOVE to travel, cook, and read (but lately I don't have much time for reading).

What do you think about selling on Etsy.com? Do you sell in other venues?

SPL: Etsy is wonderful...but at times I think your shop can get lost. It has taken me a long time to get to where I am at (once again) and while my shop is still a "work in progress", I am finally feeling like I am getting noticed ~ for my creations, customer relations and {most of all} quality. As for selling on other web sites, I have used eBay and Ruby Lane in the past. Both have proven to be exciting and profitable. I also have a few of my artistic creations available in local boutiques and galleries here in the metro DC area, Serendipity and Hope Floats.

What are your 3 favorite etsy shops?

SPL: Only three...Oh My Gosh ~ that's a hard one but I'll try...

If you could have any superpower what would it be?

SPL: It would be to "see the future". Not sure if that's considered a "superpower" but I would love to be able to see the future, pick out winning lottery numbers, and help people {everywhere} that are in need with my winnings. Whether it is with feeding the hungry, providing medical assistance/care, housing, clothing, transportation, adoption funding, and...(well you get the idea) ~ there is only so much I can do by lending my time & talents to those in need.

SPL: While I so dislike to think that money solves everything ~ it sure helps. And if I could help someone else who is struggling because of finances (because trust me ~ we all have been there) or if extra finances could help me get to that person in need ~ that would mean the world to me. I am a firm believer in "Pay It Forward", "Giving Back" and "Think About Others More Than Yourself". If we all lived our lives by these basic mottos, our world would be a much better place.

Suki Secret Santa = Love

I have a new mailman. He's not yet familiar with our route... our missives arrive late in the day & the mail is often mis-delivered (on the + side, we get to know our neighborhood a bit better).

After a longish day, I came home to a package from the UK... from someone I didn't know. But it wasn't for my neighbor - it was for me (woohoo). 'Twas something lovely from my Etsy Time Traveler Team Secret Santa!!!

This sweet stranger went to the bother of checking my shop & catering to my red riding hood ~~obsession~~ theme. How cool is that!

She made this adorable card (anyone kicking around this blog for awhile knows I have a soft spot for manga & how perfect the big-eyed Little Red really is) and the hand knotted necklace is simply adorable. I love it!

And the wolf... he fits perfectly on the shelf above my desk. My Zuni fetish white wolf has finally found mate, I think. Another wonderful thing about this fellow is how much he reminds me of the Wade figures my Nana collected. I used to (carefully) play with them when I was very, very small. This handsome fellow is now comfortably nestled between his new mate & a cherished photo of my Gran.

My Secret Santa also included the colorful book shown in the background - Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge Winter Story.... which I am looking forward to reading soon -Little Dude (the ~~pest~~ bookworm) skipped off with it as soon as I took this photo.

On other fronts, I finally found a use for these fused glass pieces. Earlier this year Holly over at Ebeads.com dropped a box of millefiori glass. Rather than toss the broken bits she thought it might be fun to make funky mosaics, so we did.

While fun to make, they've been sitting around here waiting patiently to become something. The last week or so, I've been turning them into bizarre Christmas ornaments.

Kind of out there, I know. But a lot of fun to play with. On the flipside there is a mirror.

On other fronts, all is fine here. A family member's health scare & visit to the emergency room led to surgery, complications, and a hospital stay. But he's out of the woods now and at home recovering. This year we have lots to be thankful for!

My 1st solder & glass ornament

Meet Darla. Darla is a wonder-woman!

She teaches creative classes at my local Michaels store, everything from cake decorating to scrapbooking to jewelry making. Today she kindly showed me how to make glass & solder ornaments. I've had most of the supplies for ages and have watched a few YouTube videos.... But It has been 25 years since I've picked up a soldering iron and I needed an extra push to get started.

This starter-kit from Bead Landing is great if you are new to soldering.

Other than flux, this kit has all the basic supplies to make ornaments or pendants. The kit states that you don't need to use flux. I tried working both with & without today; it seemed like the solder went down smoother with. Darla said she purchased the flux paste for around $2 at Home Depot.

The glass pieces come with the kit. The craft knife and K&C Company papers did not. Eventually I'd love to try this with some original art. Today these brightly colored papers were perfect for experimenting!

The oval has only the copper tape. The square piece has solder on top of the tape. Not too ugly for my 1st try .... yet....

Oops now it gets ugly. I made a bit of a mess while attaching the handle.

Okay. More than a bit. I gobbed too much solder on my iron. It oozed under the wire and started dripping before hardening. On the plus side, I was able to scrape most of it off with the hot iron.

Then added a jump ring . I could add more solder or smooth what is there by reheating but decided to call it good enough for a 1st try. A bit of a polish and we have -

I am looking forward to making some more of these! Each year I like to come up with new ornaments for the Christmas tree. I think some festive mini collages would be a great way to practice my soldering. Maybe then I will be ready to make some jewelry using this fun technique.

Until the 11/30 I have a few pieces hanging over at the Old Hyde Park Art Center in Tampa. It is a cute building from the late 1800s that has been home to the Tampa Realistic Artists (now theTampa Regional Artists) since the 1960s. They offer workshops, exhibits, monthly competitions and lots of other activities for local artists.

The main reason Alex and Poni stopped by today is to spread the word about some friends who could use a helping hand. Their friends own the fabulous books/antiques store, Drake Farm, in North Hampton, New Hampshire and (like too many people today) are struggling to hold things together in this challenging economy.

Drake Farm was built in 1705 and was "one of the larger sheep farms in New England and one of the larger producers of mutton for Union forces in the Civil War" Click here for more of the farm's history.

In 1995 Drake Farm became "one of the largest used-book stores in New England". They also feature a fantastic selection of curious objects, as well as original art for sale. This is one of Alexandra's favorite places to find the books with character for use in her artwork (& her personal collection).

From Alexandra: "One of the reason's we love using old pages in our art prints is to share with everyone the beauty of these antique books. We feel we are saving history, reaching people who might otherwise have known it. These lovely tomes sometimes seem like lost art. With computers and e-books, the way people read has changed. Perhaps this is another reason (in addition to the economy) that wonderful antique bookstores like Drake's Farm are hurting."

Alex is putting an open call out to anyone who loves books to please try shopping at this wonderful store. Not in New Hampshire? You can order books online at drakefarmbooks.com, by email, or phone. With over 55,000 books in stock there is a good chance they can find what you are looking for. While they don't have a lot of the books listed on line, just contact the owner, Bob, with your title or topic and he'll see what he can dig up. Most of their inventory dates from between the 17th century up through 2011.

The temps cool, leaves change, skeletons come out of the closet and onto front lawns.... plus the new Thursday Giveaway prize is Halloweenie themed! More about that later. Hi, Stevie. Thanks for letting us drop by! While we're snacking on your chocolate bars and candy corn, I have a few questions for you:

When did you first become interested in art?

Stevie: I've been interested for most of my life, but I think that really took off in middle school. Before, I'd liked my markers, and my colored pencils, and I'd liked drawing, but it wasn't a big deal. In middle school, I really got into things, and I took better classes, and was more serious. I got many more materials with which I could play and work. I also started looking up other artists and pieces that I've heard of. It really took off from there.

What are your favorite materials & why?

Stevie: I used to be a stickler for graphite. That eventually got old as I couldn't make my blacks black enough, and it was a bit too shiny for my liking. I then tried pastels, which was fun (and messy!), but then found acrylic paints. Oh, the messes I would make coming up with new things to put on canvas! I did a lot of paintings for my family. The first ever I actually liked was one for my mom, the Red Heart that's in my shop as a print. I did a few more that I'm planning on putting up. When I took my first college-level art class, I got forced to use charcoal and pen and ink. I haven't looked back since. So, right now, if I were to paint, it'd probably be in acrylic, due to durability and drying time (I can get impatient when I've got an idea in my head). I like drawing with charcoal, though in a pinch graphite'll do. I also like pen and ink. It looks so dramatic!

Your skull print, the only black & white drawing in your shop just now, really stands out. What prompted you to create this striking piece?

Stevie: I got a plaster skull once, and for a while I stuck it on my shelf and put necklaces, hats, and the occasional wig on it. One night, I couldn't sleep, so I pulled the skull down, dragged out my pen and ink stuff, and got to drawing. I guess I just wanted to see if I could make something look good in pen and ink. I loved it. I then tried doing it in charcoal, but that didn't pan out as well. Needless to say, the skull you see in the shop remains one of my favorite pieces, to this day.

What are your thoughts on working in black & white vs color?

Stevie: Working in black and white as opposed to full color is interesting. I think I like it better. I don't mix colors often enough to be good at it (or I'm a perfectionist and just want the exact....right....shade), but working in black and white lets me focus on value. Most of the things I draw aren't in color. I like it in that it's easier to focus on value, and to look at the thing itself as opposed to the colors in it. I like that you can get so much in with just a few pencils. In essence, I prefer it. I'm better at it, and I love the contrast you can achieve in black and white.

Where do you find inspiration?

Stevie: I find inspiration everywhere. When it comes to photographs I'll shoot a picture of anything that looks good. I don't keep many of them, and more often than not I'll sit there scratching my head, "Why did I...what's in here that's worth something?". For drawings, I'll draw what's near me, unless I specifically want to practice something. In that case, I'll look it up on the internet and draw from there. I've done portraits, one of my grandma after she passed away (for my mom), and another of my brother-in-law and HIS mom. Both of those were from photographs. I'll doodle random things that pop into my head, say, during class or while I'm reading, and if I like them I'll expand them and make them better. Sometimes I'll take a picture of something specifically to draw it.

What was the last movie you watched? Do you think it will influence your future art?

Stevie: The last movie I watched was Alice. It's a made-for-tv modern adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, one of my favorite children's books. I think it just might influence me. It was at times, very surreal, and I loved the originality and the style. I've always loved it when things were turned topsy-turvy, like in the art of M.C.Escher. I think finding something and making it my own, but still recognizable, sounds like something fun to try.

Do you listen to anything while creating?

Stevie: It depends. I prefer to be able to focus. If I'm up in my room, drawing by myself, I don't often listen to anything. If I do, I don't notice when it stops playing. If I'm downstairs with the rest of my family, or in a public area, and I just want to draw I'll turn on some music and just start drawing. I don't usually listen to stuff with words, as I end up focusing more on the lyrics than what I'm working on, but sometimes, if I think it fits the subject matter, I'll make an exception.

How long have you been selling your art? Why did you pick Etsy.com as a selling venue?

Stevie: I've been selling my art for a few months now. Before, I had no idea how to go about doing it, or even if it'd sell, but my mom and sister, who both also have shops on Etsy, encouraged me to start. I think the fact that they were encouraging me, and knew how to work with Etsy, what to do, how to promote, got me to start where they were. I had a better level of familiarity and people to ask when it came to Etsy.

I am also just stocking my DeviantArt online gallery where I will sell prints in a variety of sizes, both with and without frames.

Stevie: My mom's (Raven Phoenix Studios and Every Witch Way) and my sister's (Beadiful Baubles) top the list right now. I like Sassy Steampunk, Vampire Goth Chick, Water Flowing West, Decadent Delusion, and Black Friday Studios are some fun ones as well.

What do you like to do when you are not creating?

Stevie: I like reading, and sometimes watching a movie or TV show. I'm a college student so much of my time is devoted to studying.

If you had any superpower, what would it be? Would you use it for good or evil?

Stevie: Oh, wow, haven't thought about it for a while. If I could have any superpower, I think it'd be the ability to control matter. I wouldn't use it for evil, I'm too nice for that. I'd definitely use it for good. I think it might help alleviate boredom....

With Halloween just around the corner, any thoughts or great Halloween memories that you’d like to share?

Stevie: I remember one Halloween I went over to my friend's house to watch scary movies. I'm a wimp when it comes to scary movies, even though my favorite TV show is a horror show. I was essentially freaking out all night, and she just laughed and laughed at me. I love seeing my nieces in their costumes, too.

Illustration Friday - Hibernate

Once again loving IllustrationFriday's new prompt- this week it is the evocative Hibernate. Many thanks to stock photographer/model daylight-calling for sharing her wonderful images on deviantart.com. Anybody who pops over here regularly knows that DeviantArt is one of my top go-to spots for models. I was super happy to stumble onto daylight-calling's stock tonight.

Dredging the itunes library for some torpid inspiration led me to Jude's No One Is Really Beautiful. (The only clean version of "I know" that I could find for sharing is from the City of Angels Soundtrack)

I've also been mulling over a line from Wilde's Dorian Gray, which I'm rereading for for the Etsy Time Travelers Team book club: "The world belongs to you for a season.... The moment I met you I saw that you were quite unconscious of what you really are, of what you really might be."

You have everything from cute-n-fluffy to spooky Halloween in you shop. Are there any special Muses that influence your creations?

SG: I am very interested in art nouveau and the literature and culture of the fin de siecle. I also love surrealist art and literature. Finally, I am a fashion junkie. I admire designers like Alexander McQueen, who blurred the line between art and fashion. If I could have one particular talent, that would be it.

Do you listen to music while creating? If so, what is on your current playlist?

SG: I usually like it to be quiet when I create, but I do listen to a lot of music. I mostly enjoy punk rock and indie bands. Right now, one of my favorite bands is actually Taylor Momsen's band, the Pretty Reckless. She has a great voice.

What are your Top 3 favorite Etsy Shops?

SG: It's impossible to choose just three! I love Calliope's Attic, Paloma Antigua, and Miss Fickle Media for metal supplies, Loop and BohoKnitterChic for spinning fiber, and Melia's Muse and Art Snark (of course!) for feeding my ACEO addiction.

((blushes)) Is there anything you want to share about your new found love of ACEOs? For anyone unfamiliar with ACEOs (Art Cards Editions & Originals), they are mini-artworks. SG: I would be a vampire, and I'd mostly use it for good. I definitely wouldn't sparkle.

Snowy Owl Lace Earrings from Decadent Delusion

SG: A pair of white lace owl earrings. These fabulous lace earrings are a collaboration with my Mom (She goes by Millinery Mary on Etsy) She embroidered the owl pendants using a computerized embroidery machine. They are "free standing lace," which means that they are super lightweight, yet sturdy and rigid enough to function as beads and pendants for making earrings and other jewelry. I have accented each owl with a clear AB Swarovski crystal. Each earring measures approximately 1 1/2 inches long and is attached to a silver plated ear wire.

Xmas Dolly has posted her new MM theme - today it is all about the 1970s. I've been enjoying Tom Waits with a side of coffee & photoshop today, so here's my 70s contribution.

Skull doodles WIP

Sadly, I missed last week's prompt, "disguise." Time slipped away from me.... but I am playing with the mask doodles again this year. So happy to find more paper mache skelly parts when cleaning up my messy space. Last fall, I found that although I don't stick to art journaling, skull scribbling somehow clicks for me.

2010 WIP skull, since finished

I'm thinking about listing this 2010 mask on Etsy. It has been finished (oops - never did take a final photo) & is displayed on a modified doll stand. The question is - should I add holes & ribbon so that it can be hung on a wall before listing? What do you think? I'd love any suggestions.

Ok, maybe I need more coffee but I (almost) love this drummer as much as Neil Peart.

Definately in my Top 20 of Wake-your-tired-@$$-up Monday Music. I never post it: A) because it got overplayed with Rescue Me (great show) & B) you can't embed a decent version, only some okay live ones. For a balanced sound & better take on this song, click this link to catch the official video.

After a late nite chattering over at the Time Travellers Team sale on etsy, 2 giant espressos & loud music are the only things waking up these insomniac's bones.

Question for you - remember how much you hated getting up for school? Am I the only Mom that somewhat resents having to do it again (not only that- but to do it earlier so that fresh pancakes are on the table when I drag an unnamed sleepy bum out of bed?) - ok,ok feeling petty. Please forgive me - it happens on a Monday.
